What is a Neap Tide?

A neap tide is a period when the difference between high and low tide is at its smallest. This occurs twice a month—during the moon's first and last quarters—when the sun and moon are positioned at a right angle (90 degrees) to each other relative to the Earth.

Because the gravitational pulls of the sun and moon partially counteract each other at these times, the tidal force is weaker. Consequently, high tides are not as high and low tides are not as low, resulting in calmer, less pronounced tides.
